Measuring antenna impedance or line losses is of a great interest to Radio Amateurs. That too when it comes to measure an antenna performance without having a transmitter, it brings special attention of homebrewers.

This project uses AD9850/51 as a Signal Generator and AD8307 as a detector and works with a resistive return-loss bridge.

Look simple but it is made so by our friend Tony / I2TZK who spent a lots of time in making Firmware and PC software for this project. 

AAZ-0912 is designed to accommodate AD9850, SMT 125MHZ OSC and SMT SO8 AD8307. This mod made possible prepare full kits and assembled at low prices.

A special PC software is developed by Tony / I2TZK which, when installed on your PC, gives you a graphical presentation of how good your antenna is!!

To further cheer-up homebrewers, we have made a small carrier board for SSOP28 package of AD9850/51. AAZ-0912 kits are supplied with DDS chip pre-soldered on carrier board to make assembly of this kit without much pain.

Purpose of this project is to encourage radio amateurs to build their own Antenna Analyzer at a low cost.  

I2TZK PC Software (WinXP/WIN7) & PIC Firmware V3.00 for AAZ-0912 has achieved following design task:  

Simple Single Micro Controller with built-in A/D converter (PIC18F2550/2553)
DDS Based signal Generator. Act as a signal source too
Main features are:
USB Powered.
Full HF Range: to 35MHZ
Stable Reference voltage using MCP1525.
BNC Connector for antenna connection
Calculates SWR and other parameters of antenna 
Free PC Program by Tony / I2TZK 
Firmware accepts PIC18F2550 or 2553 and DDS AD9851 or AD9850 (V3.00).
AD8307 as a Log Amplifier.
AD9850/51 Carrier board supplied
Works with AAZ-BT-0813 Bluetooth Interafce with small modification

Full Kits: AAZ-0912
Includes AD9850 Pre-Soldered on Carrier board. Also include AD8307 SO8 pre-soldered on main board. 

AD9850 module is tested for full HF range. AAZ-0912 boards are designed to accommodate AD9850 or AD9851, SMT AD8307 and DIP or SMT 125MHZ OSC.

All SMT parts are pre-soldered and Included.


PC USB Noise
Important Note:
PC Noise do have influence over performance of AAZ kits. If erratic DDS operation or readings are observed, please use a Split Toroid over your USB Cable. (Or use USB cable with an EMI Toroid)
An improved PC software (and associated PIC Firmware) with Noise Filter and other advanced features is under development by Tony/I2TZK and will be released soon.
